Chamber of reflection
We are all mirrors. Of one another, of the earth, of the cosmos, and of ourselves. If you look closely, you can find yourself reflected in almost everything around you.
Take the iris of your eye, or better yet, someone else’s. You might notice the resemblance to galaxies, stars, and the vastness of space. Look at the veins in your arm and compare them to the roots of trees, the delicate veins of leaves, or even the branching waterways of the earth. Our inner world echoes our outer worlds.
The same is true of the mind. How we perceive the world is shaped less by what’s happening and more by the story we tell ourselves about it. Two people might glance your way and laugh. You could believe they’re criticizing you, or you could believe you reminded them of someone they adore, someone who always makes them laugh. Maybe they’re judging your outfit, or maybe they’re admiring it. Since we’ll never truly know what goes on in another person’s head, why choose the version that makes us feel worse?
Our assumptions matter because they don’t just affect how we feel, they shape the reality we live in. Someone who constantly assumes others dislike them will eventually start living as if it’s true. Stress builds, new connections are avoided, and health begins to suffer under the weight of thoughts that were never real to begin with. On the other hand, choosing to believe the best in others opens the door to meaningful conversations, fun relationships, and a more joyful life. And maybe the most powerful option is to drop assumptions altogether – to rest in the unknown, and in doing so, find peace within ourselves.
I once heard the mind compared to a radio station. You can tune into whichever frequency you want. One station plays the voice of your highest self, the version of you who trusts that dreams are possible, who shows up as the person you aspire to be. Another station plays the familiar loop of self doubt, old patterns, and limiting beliefs. Both stations are available, but the one you choose to listen to will shape what your world reflects back to you.
In the end, we are all reflections. The traits we admire in others, and the ones that bother us, often mirror what already lives within us. When we understand this, the way we move through the world shifts. Our inner life and outer life are not separate — they’re always in conversation, always reflecting one another.
